When I started hosting Sunday Soul Sessions I hoped they’d offer a spacious pause to listen to our own lives. I like to choose themes that help us to consider the deeper parts of ourselves. This Sunday evening our theme is Roots: considering the Rhythms and Relationships that ground us. We’ll be thinking about the rhythms and rituals we have in our life that nurture and nourish us, and the moments of rest and of play.
I’ve wanted to consider my own rhythms, and would love to take time to shape a Rule of Life1. Hence I chose this theme back in February. We all already have patterns, rituals, habits that nourish us, and I wanted to spend some collective time exploring them.
At first a theme of ‘Nourishing Rhythms’ almost seems flippant. Our routine, our ordinary daily lives, maybe a facial skincare regime. But how we nourish and care for ourselves in the mundane is indicative of much deeper questions. How do I value my own needs in comparison to those around me? What long-lived narrative do I tell myself about my productivity and worth? How often am I present to how I’m really feeling?
Fast forward to this week as I’m planning this session. A week where once again I realise I’ve overestimated my capacity. A week with significant conversations about my ability to notice my own needs. Or more accurately my inability to notice my own needs. These patterns are deeply rooted in personality, family of origin and layers of cultural expectations.
This will not be a productivity workshop, rather it is a gentle invitation to consider alone and together just how we can nourish and nurture ourselves in our actual day to day lives. Perhaps it’s just what I need, and maybe it sounds inviting to you too?
We’ll meet on Zoom from 8pm-9:30pm BST on Sunday 27th April. We’ll have times of quiet, gentle prompts for journalling or doodling and times to share together too. The cost is £10 (plus a booking fee): see below for all the details.
If you have any nourishing rhythms or rituals I’d love to hear about them in the comments.
Hoping that this weekend brings some nourishment to you,
With love,
Debbie

“The word rule is used because it comes from the Latin word regula, associated with a bar or trellis, the woodwork on which a plant grows. The idea is that we (like plants) are always growing and changing…The rule of life is intended to pattern communal life in the direction of purpose and love instead of chaos and decay.” - Justin Whitmel Earley
